Arezzo
Arezzo was born as an Etruscan settlement in the fourth
century BC. It is this population that owes its name. It was
important in Roman times as a military station of the Via
Cassia, but it declined in the Middle Ages. The city's revival
between the ninth and twelfth century is mainly due to the
power of bishops. In 1098 Arezzo became a free city
starting famous battles with Siena and Florence. Arezzo
gained considerable importance as a Roman military station.
Arezzo had a great defeat in 1928 against Florence. In the fourteenth century. the city fell
under the control of the Medici Signoria. Battle of Arezzo
Campaldino cost a great defeat.
After the unification of Italy Arezzo reaffirmed its
economics and administration. Arezzo now is a tourist town
and is close to the important art cities of Tuscany: the
Autostrada A1, the train and bus service link Arezzo to Siena and Florence all year.
